ESB Raises $575 Million in Ireland’s First European Green Bond Deal

ESB raised approximately $575 million through its first European Green Bond, the first Irish corporate issuance under the EU framework.
The 10-year bond carries a 4.375% coupon, with proceeds directed toward electricity networks, renewable generation and battery storage.
ESB plans approximately $23 billion of capital investment by 2030 as it expands Ireland’s electricity system and pursues net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
DUBLIN, Ireland: ESB has raised approximately $575 million through its inaugural European Green Bond, becoming the first Irish corporate issuer to use the EU’s regulated green bond format.
The 10-year bond carries a coupon of 4.375%. ESB will allocate the proceeds to eligible investments supporting the decarbonisation and expansion of Ireland’s electricity system.
The transaction is ESB’s fourth green bond but its first under the European Green Bond Regulation. The framework introduces standardised requirements for issuers seeking to label bonds as European Green Bonds.
Capital for Ireland’s electricity transition
ESB plans approximately $23 billion in capital investment by 2030. The programme is designed to build an electricity system capable of supporting housing growth, economic expansion and wider technological change.
The investment aligns with the Irish Government’s National Development Plan and ESB’s strategy to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Proceeds from the latest bond can finance electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure, renewable electricity generation and battery energy storage systems.
For investors, the structure provides greater visibility into how green bond capital is allocated. That has become increasingly important as sustainable finance markets face greater scrutiny over environmental claims and the use of proceeds.
The issuance follows ESB’s publication of an updated Green Finance Framework and European Green Bond Factsheet in August. Together, the documents establish how green financing proceeds will be allocated and managed.
Moody’s Ratings independently assessed the framework and awarded it its highest sustainability quality score of “Excellent.” Moody’s also completed a pre-issuance review of the European Green Bond Factsheet.

EU rules raise the bar for green finance
The European Green Bond Regulation creates a voluntary standard for issuers seeking to market bonds using the EuGB designation. It aims to improve comparability, transparency and credibility across Europe’s sustainable debt market.
ESB’s decision to issue under the framework places its financing programme within those disclosure and external review requirements.
Anne Marie Kean, ESB Group Treasurer, commented: “The successful completion of ESB’s inaugural European Green Bond is an important milestone in the evolution of our sustainable finance programme. The strong investor support received reflects confidence in ESB’s strategy and our significant investment programme to modernise and expand Ireland’s electricity infrastructure. It also indicates the value that investors put on having a clear and transparent basis for supporting this journey.”
Anne Marie Kean, ESB Group Treasurer
BBVA Corporate & Investment Banking and ING acted as Joint Sustainability Coordinators. They supported ESB in developing its updated Green Finance Framework and European Green Bond Factsheet.
BBVA, Goodbody, ING, MUFG and Société Générale acted as Joint Bookrunners on the issuance.
What investors should take away
The financing comes as electricity grids take a larger role in national climate and economic strategies. Renewable capacity can only expand at scale if transmission, distribution and storage infrastructure develops alongside it.
For ESB, the green bond connects that infrastructure challenge directly with institutional capital. Its planned $23 billion investment programme extends well beyond renewable generation to the networks required to accommodate electrification and growing electricity demand.
The deal also provides an early corporate test of Europe’s new green bond regime. As more issuers consider the EuGB label, investors will gain a clearer view of whether stronger disclosure and external review requirements can establish a more consistent benchmark for sustainable debt.
For Ireland, the capital supports a broader national priority: expanding the electricity system while reducing its carbon intensity. That makes grid investment increasingly relevant not only to climate targets, but also to housing, industrial growth and long-term economic competitiveness.
