Brookfield Invests $600 Million in ACME Green Fuels

Brookfield will invest up to $600 million in ACME Cleantech Ventures to develop green ammonia and green methanol projects.
The investment gives Brookfield its first exposure to the region’s low-carbon fuels sector, extending its substantial renewable energy presence in India.
ACME will use the capital to advance projects in India and Oman, targeting domestic demand and international buyers.
Brookfield will invest up to $600 million in India’s ACME Cleantech Ventures, expanding its energy transition strategy into low-carbon fuels.
The capital will support the development and construction of green ammonia and green methanol projects in India and Oman. It also gives the global alternative asset manager its first exposure to the region’s low-carbon fuels sector.
The investment will be made through Brookfield’s Global Transition Fund strategy. For ACME, it provides institutional capital to advance a pipeline of projects as demand for lower-carbon industrial fuels grows.
Brookfield moves deeper into energy transition
Brookfield already has a substantial position in India’s renewable energy market. Its portfolio includes about 50 gigawatts of operating and pipeline wind and solar assets.
The ACME investment takes the firm further along the clean energy value chain. Rather than focusing solely on renewable power generation, Brookfield is adding exposure to fuels produced using clean electricity.
Green ammonia and green methanol are emerging as potential decarbonisation tools for sectors where direct electrification can be difficult. These include shipping, chemicals and other emissions-intensive industrial activities.
Demand is expected to grow as companies seek alternatives to fossil fuels and work toward corporate and national decarbonisation targets.
For infrastructure investors, that shift is creating another category of transition assets. However, project economics depend heavily on renewable electricity costs, infrastructure, long-term buyers and supportive policy frameworks.
ACME targets India and export markets
ACME plans to use Brookfield’s investment to develop its advanced pipeline of green fuel projects in India and Oman.
The company is targeting both domestic and export markets. It has already secured supply agreements with several international and Indian customers.
Its overseas buyers include Norway’s Yara International and Japan’s IHI Corporation and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical. Those agreements provide a commercial foundation as ACME works to scale production.
Oman also provides ACME with a strategic base for supplying international markets. The country is pursuing a larger role in the emerging green hydrogen and derivatives industry, including fuels intended for export.
India, meanwhile, offers a different combination of opportunities. Its expanding renewable energy sector can provide the clean power required for green fuel production. Domestic industries also face growing pressure to reduce emissions as global supply chains tighten climate requirements.

Transition capital moves beyond renewables
Brookfield’s investment reflects a broader expansion of private capital into technologies that sit downstream from renewable power.
Wind and solar remain central to the energy transition. Yet meeting industrial climate targets will also require investment in fuels, storage, grids and other infrastructure capable of replacing fossil-based systems.
Green ammonia is particularly relevant for fertiliser production, where conventional ammonia relies heavily on fossil fuels. It is also being explored as a potential marine fuel and energy carrier.
Green methanol has attracted interest from the shipping sector as companies look for lower-carbon alternatives to conventional bunker fuels.
For investors, the opportunity comes with execution risk. Green fuel projects require large amounts of renewable electricity and substantial upfront capital. Their competitiveness also depends on long-term demand, regulation and the cost gap with fossil-based alternatives.
What executives and investors should watch
The $600 million commitment links one of the world’s largest alternative asset managers with an Indian developer pursuing international green fuel markets.
For Brookfield, it broadens an existing renewable energy strategy into another part of the decarbonisation economy. For ACME, the investment adds financial capacity as it moves projects from development toward construction and production.
The deal also illustrates how India’s energy transition is beginning to extend beyond renewable generation. Capital is increasingly targeting the infrastructure needed to convert clean electricity into products that can decarbonise industry and international trade.
Whether green ammonia and methanol achieve large-scale adoption will depend on costs, policy and reliable demand. The next test will be converting expanding project pipelines and supply agreements into commercially competitive production.
