Amazon Invests in 700 MW of New Carbon-Free Energy Projects to Power Future Data Centers in Nevada

Kenny Fisher

May 11, 2026

Amazon announced that it is investing in 700 MW of new carbon-free energy projects in Nevada to power its future data center operations in the area.
The company said that it has signed an agreement with Nevada-based NV Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, to add 100 MW of geothermal power from renewable energy company Zanskar, and 600 MW of solar plus 600 MW of battery storage from renewable energy developer Primergy to the Nevada power grid.
The company added that the NV Energy deal will mark its first data center to be powered in part by geothermal energy, and that it sees significant potential for geothermal as a scalable source of firm carbon-free power.
Amazon said:
“Geothermal is a particularly exciting addition to Amazon’s carbon-free energy portfolio powering our data centers. Unlike other renewable sources that fluctuate with weather or time of day, geothermal harnesses the Earth’s constant internal heat to generate power around the clock.”
The company said that the battery storage component of the Primergy agreement will bring needed capacity to the Nevada grid by capturing solar energy during peak production periods and dispatching it when demand is highest, extending the value of solar generation beyond daylight hours and supporting the around-the-clock reliability required by data centers.
Amazon was one of the largest corporate clean energy offtakers globally in 2025, according to BloombergNEF, contracting 10.22 GW in the year. The company has invested in more than 700 renewable energy projects globally, representing more than 40 GW of carbon-free energy capacity.
