Credit: Gustavo Frazao | ShutterstockTotal0Shares 0 0 0 0 0 The Carbon Business Council, a coalition that brings together more than 100 leading carbon management companies, has launched a Latin America Carbon Removal Working Group, aiming to accelerate the regional investment and development in this decarbonization sector.Looking to fortify Latin America’s carbon dioxide removal (CDR) leadership potential, the Working Group unites key stakeholders from across the value chain, including entities like standards bodies, insurers, banks, and project developers. Together, these representatives will focus on boosting participation in regional policymaking, highlighting local leadership opportunities ahead of the COP30 event scheduled to start on November 10 in Brazil. The newly established Latin America CDR Working Group is chaired by Isaac De León Mendoza, a highly esteemed regional leader with an extensive background in global climate and energy negotiations. Commenting on this initiative, he shared, “Latin America plays a key role in the future of carbon removal. By connecting local expertise with a global coalition, we can build the necessary financial, educational, and political bridges to help the region reach its full potential.” «We need vast carbon removal in the global south,» Marian Krueger, remove Co-FounderWorking Group members, who are also slated to attend the COP30 event, include Boomitra, CarbonFuture, CERCARBONO, Exomad Green, Future Climate Group, Howden, InPlanet, KfW (German Development Bank), Mombak, Mitsubishi Corporation, Silica Carbon, Terradot, and TierraPrieta, among others, with participation from major development banks and financial institutions.As a short-term objective, in early 2026 the Working Group members intend to publish an Investment Roadmap that will identify opportunities for scaling high-integrity CDR methodologies and mobilizing public and private funding, pinning down pathways for regional collaboration. Relevant: New Policy Primer By Carbon Business Council Offers Pointers On Advancing CDR In CanadaBen Rubin, executive director of the Carbon Business Council and publisher of the Carbon Herald, stated, “COP30 highlights the promise and enormous potential of Latin America to position itself as a global leader in carbon removal.”“The region has the talent, resources, and determination to lead this market, and this Working Group aims to turn that potential into concrete results and investment,” he added.For the Carbon Business Council, this launch adds to a growing global network of working groups, following the establishment of a CDR-focused working group in Canada earlier this year.
