This greenlighting motion comes approximately a month after carbon removal was included in Germany’s draft federal budget. With the German cabinet approving this substantial CDR budget, the country is set to allocate more than €111 million (~$128 million) for carbon removal projects in 2026, along with €44 million (~$50 million) dedicated to enhancing soil carbon sinks.The Cabinet-approved version of the budget will see €98 million (~$113 million) funneled into CDR project funding, €11.5 million (more than $13 million) dedicated for carbon credits purchases, and €2 million (~$2.3 million) slated for project management costs. Funding for negative emissions is also included for the years through 2033 in the form of binding agreements that can total €320 million (nearly $370 million). «CDR can scale — if the funding’s there,» Leila Conners, film directorWith this cabinet decision, Germany is making a bold statement on its future carbon management plans, where the country is well positioned to take one of the leading spots on the global CDR scene. This year, the United States—a leading force in CDR technologies—has faced climate sector turbulence due to shifting political priorities.Relevant: Germany Includes CDR In Its New Federal Budget ProposalAs a result, many other geographies around the world are now presented with a chance to position themselves among the trailblazers in this prolific sector, and Germany seems to be seizing the opportunity to emerge as a CDR frontrunner. The CDR funding greenlighted in the draft 2026 budget by the German cabinet is part of a medium-term general financial scheme that extends to 2029 and covers a total spending of €520.5 billion (more than $600 billion).
