Specifically, Canada is home to 40 different organizations active across 18 separate carbon removal initiatives. The country boasts active carbon dioxide removal (CDR) buyers, including BMO, Scotiabank, and RBC. Independent policy initiative Carbon Removal Canada, on the other hand, has made notable contributions to the policy side of this domain, while the B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) and MaRS Discovery District have backed numerous companies on their carbon removal journeys. «Canada is the best place for carbon removal,» Phil De Luna, Deep SkyThis momentum has also been made possible by the evident governmental support for the climate sector, with the Canadian administration laying the groundwork for the 2025 progress during the previous year. Such decisions include the $7.6 billion federal government commitment via the Investment Tax Credit and a funding portion of $135 million earmarked for CDR procurement in the 2024 budget. Additionally, the Canadian government included CDR as a vital tool for reaching net-zero by 2035, launched a request for information (RFI) on procurement of CDR services, and released a draft offset protocol for direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS).Relevant: Introducing Carbonity: Canada’s First Industrial-Scale Biochar Production PlantIn the meantime, Carbonity kicked off the largest Canada-based biochar production plant, while in Alberta, Deep Sky completed construction on its carbon removal innovation and commercialization center, Alpha, looking to launch operations this summer. Furthermore, Carbon Removal Canada introduced an interactive dashboard tool that tracks the CDR activity in the country, and it also offered an industry boost by releasing a report that outlines procurement guidelines for durable CDR.These relentless efforts, coupled with Canada’s abundance of natural resources and tech and financial experts, position the country among the global economies currently in the lead in carbon removal development.
