This milestone motion marks the first time CDR makes the list of federal budget spending proposals and confirms a strong interest and commitment on behalf of European governments in novel technologies that simultaneously tackle excess atmospheric CO2 emissions and present advantageous market growth opportunities. The news was shared on social media by the German Association for Negative Emissions (DVNE), which acts as an advocate for the accelerated adoption of CDR technologies on the path towards reaching German net-zero targets by 2045 and turning the country into a net-negative economy beyond that deadline.Active as a national carbon removal association, the DVNE is also working towards ensuring that the government of Germany starts purchasing CDR certificates and begins financing German projects. As pointed out in the DVNE publication, the inclusion of CDR in the German federal budget is focused not only on research and development in this sector, but it’s also explicitly indicated for scaling carbon removal efforts. «We want to build CDR up the right way,» Helen Lundebye, CDRjobs co-founderWhile this initial federal CDR funding sliver is modest in size, it does lay the foundation for potential bigger budgets earmarked for carbon removal in the future. That is exactly what the DVNE will work to achieve, centering efforts around increasing the German federal funding for CDR in the budget for 2026.Announced by German finance minister Lars Klingbeil, the new draft budget is expected to reach final approval by the Bundestag in September.Relevant: Germany Secures EU Approval For $5.4B Carbon Reduction SchemeThis news also comes at a time when the United States, positioned as the globally most developed carbon removal industry, is facing uncertainties on governmental support for CDR projects. Europe is one of the geographies that has also stood out in potential to lead the global CDR market, with the Nordic countries and the UK actively paving the way towards this vision. At the same time, regions like Asia and Canada are also making substantial strides in governmental support for CDR, and long-term efforts over time will determine which region takes the lead in the future.
