Listen to this story:
First-of-its-kind system: ISO 14064-certified carbon credits now available for IT asset disposition (ITAD), providing enterprises a verified way to reduce Scope 3 emissions.
Measurable ROI on sustainability: Companies can monetize e-waste reduction through certified credits, enhancing ESG strategies and carbon accountability.
Asset-level traceability: New cloud-based platform enables verifiable carbon insets through responsible tech retirement and reuse.
Sage Sustainable Electronics and environmental consultancy Bloom-ESG have introduced the first ISO 14064-certified carbon credit system for IT asset disposition—enabling corporations to turn responsible tech retirement into a strategic ESG advantage.
The new framework allows businesses to quantify and monetize carbon insets generated from refurbishing, reusing, or properly recycling retired electronics—actions that previously offered little financial return despite their environmental benefit.
“Carbon credits increase our customers’ return on investment from ITAD,” said Bob Houghton, CEO of Sage. “Our clients have long prioritised sustainability in surplus tech disposal—certified credits now reward that commitment with tangible value.”

Recycling a tonne of mixed e-waste can prevent about 0.75 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Refurbishing and reusing that same hardware may save more than 16 tonnes—yet until now, those benefits often went uncounted due to a lack of standardised verification.
“With traceability down to the individual asset level, we can now issue carbon avoidance certificates with full integrity,” said Sebastian Foot, Founding Partner at Bloom-ESG. “This is enabled by Sage’s chain-of-custody controls and our cloud-based impact platform.”

The certified credits can be used to offset Scope 3 emissions—often the most difficult to mitigate—or traded on the voluntary carbon market, with safeguards against double counting.

As a launch incentive tied to Earth Day, Sage is offering 1,000 free carbon credits to clients who update or sign new Statements of Work by June 30, helping them kickstart a carbon registry account.
For executives looking to align IT operations with climate goals, this collaboration offers a credible, data-backed pathway to embed sustainability deeper into corporate infrastructure.
