Specifically, the roadmap outlines a strategy for advancing carbon dioxide removal, carbon capture, carbon sequestration or storage, and carbon utilization in Colorado in alignment with the state’s natural resources and economic and social capabilities. This announcement comes as a result of the HB23-1210 bill passed by the Colorado General Assembly back in 2023, which mandated the creation of a Carbon Management Roadmap for the State of Colorado. In response to this motion, the Colorado Energy Office (CEO) partnered with the Great Plains Institute (GPI), diving into comprehensive research on the state’s carbon management activity. The analysis included examining prior executive, legislative, and regulatory carbon management actions, safety and health considerations, and economic opportunities and challenges associated with this industry, including community and environmental justice factors. «North America will be the largest carbon capture market,» Wendy Lam, Capsol Technologies CEOAdditionally, the CEO engaged in dialogue with industry figures, local community leaders, tribal representatives, and other relevant stakeholders, taking their feedback into account when putting together the carbon management roadmap. When it comes to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), the roadmap highlights opportunities for capturing CO2 from industrial facilities, like cement and ethanol plants, referencing projects driven by enhancements to the federal 45Q tax credit and California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard.Relevant: Land Life And Colorado State Land Board To Reforest Wildfire-Affected EcosystemsIt points out the necessity for a CO2 transportation infrastructure that would connect emitters with carbon storage or utilization sites. Colorado’s abundance in geological storage, particularly in saline aquifers, makes the country a well-suited hub for carbon dioxide storage. In regard to carbon dioxide removal, the roadmap identifies significant potential for advancing various technologies, including direct air capture (DAC), biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS), biochar, mineralization, and nature-based CDR approaches like reforestation that leverage natural carbon sinks to capture and store CO2. The Colorado Carbon Management Roadmap also outlines recommendations on market development and policy support, emphasizing the importance of cross-sector communication and cooperation in the transition towards a low-carbon future.
