Listen to this story:
The new Construction Products Regulation enhances product transparency, enabling carbon footprint calculations and improving sustainability.
Digital Product Passports will provide detailed information on performance, safety, and usage to support informed decision-making.
Prefabricated and modular construction methods are expected to cut construction waste by 10-15% and accelerate housing development.
Modernizing EU Construction Standards
The European Union’s new Construction Products Regulation officially takes effect, replacing the 2011 rules to modernize the industry and boost competitiveness across the EU Single Market.
The regulation introduces Digital Product Passports, which provide comprehensive product information, including performance, safety data, and sustainability metrics. These digital records will also enable reliable carbon footprint calculations for entire buildings.
“The regulation helps builders, architects, engineers, consumers, and public authorities make informed choices based on the performance and sustainability of construction products,” the EU Commission noted.

Advancing Sustainable Innovation
The regulation emphasizes offsite construction methods, such as prefabricated and modular elements, which can:
Cut Waste: Reduce construction waste during manufacturing by 10-15%.
Improve Circularity: Prefabricated units can be disassembled and repurposed at the end of their lifecycle.
Speed Up Housing Projects: Offsite techniques lower costs and accelerate housing development timelines.
The EU aims to lead in innovative, sustainable construction while increasing sector productivity and reducing environmental impacts.
