Foxconn Commits to 100% Renewable Electricity by 2040

Susan Lahey

April 24, 2024

Taiwan-based electronics manufacturing giant Hon Hai Technology Group, known internationally as Foxconn, announced a new pledge to run its worldwide operations on 100% renewable electricity by 2040.

The new pledge extends a commitment made by Foxconn in 2022 to use at least 50% green power by 2030. The company’s renewable energy ratio is now greater than 40%. Foxconn also announced in 2020 a goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

As the world’s largest electronics contract manufacturer, the new clean energy commitment could help support initiatives by a broad range of companies to address the climate impact of their supply chains. Foxconn is one of Apple’s largest suppliers for example, and one of the companies that have committed to Apple to use only renewable energy for the manufacture of its products by 2030.

Alongside the new commitment, Foxconn also announced that it has joined RE100, an initiative led by the Climate Group in partnership with CDP, to bring together the world’s most influential companies committed to 100% renewable electricity. RE100 members commit to sourcing 100% of the electricity used across their global operations with electricity from renewable sources.

Foxconn Chairman and CEO Young Liu, who also heads the Group’s Sustainability Committee, said:

“In promoting sustainability, Foxconn will continue to seek the most suitable international standards. This decision to respond to RE100 is based on this thinking. More importantly, we hope to set an example with our supply chain and partners so they will prioritize sustainable management as well. Foxconn will also promote green energy at its global locations to share, collaborate and thrive with all stakeholders.”
