Phillips 66 Converts Oil Refinery to Produce Only Renewable Fuel

Susan Lahey

April 3, 2024

Energy products manufacturer Phillips 66 today announced that it has converted its San Francisco oil refinery in Rodeo, California to process only renewable feedstocks, and is now producing approximately 30,000 barrels per day of renewable diesel, with the commercial-scale production marking a significant milestone in its project to operate one of the world’s largest renewable fuels facilities.

The achievement follows the company’s announcement in 2022 of its plans to convert the refinery into the Rodeo Renewable Energy Complex, which would no longer process crude oil and will instead use waste oils, fats, greases and vegetable oils instead to produce 800 million gallons per year (over 50,000 barrels per day) of renewable transportation fuels, including renewable diesel, renewable gasoline and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

Phillips 66 said that the facility is on track hit the 800 million gallons per year renewable fuels production rate by the end of the second quarter. The company added that the facility is expected to start production of renewable jet, a key component of sustainable aviation fuel, in the second quarter

Rich Harbison, Phillips 66 executive vice president of Refining said:

“We are proud to announce this significant achievement at our Rodeo facility. The project advances Phillips 66’s long-held strategy to expand our renewable fuels production, lower our carbon footprint, and provide reliable, affordable energy while creating long-term value for our shareholders.”
