The National Science Foundation (NSF), on behalf of the White House’s Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Fast-Track Action Committee, has opened a Request For Information from all interested parties to inform the development of an implementation plan to advance a key recommendation of the Ocean Climate Action Plan.“This is an important policy development because it is the first time the White House’s Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Fast-Track Action Committee is soliciting input on marine CDR,” commented in a communication to Carbon Herald, Vasishth Srivastava, Senior Director at Evergreen Strategy Group. Relevant: White House Forms Committee On Marine Carbon RemovalThe Ocean Climate Action Plan was released in March 2023 to represent ongoing and planned federal ocean-based climate mitigation and adaptation activities, identify gaps in climate and ocean science, and recommend new or enhanced ocean science and policy actions to tackle climate change.The implementation plan the government is requesting input on will aim to advance three actions to enable marine CDR research that is part of the Ocean Climate Action Plan: Establish a comprehensive Federal marine CDR research program;Clarify permitting, regulatory, and other standards and policies, and establish guidelines for marine CDR research;Establish a Marine CDR Initiative to enable public-private partnerships and set up mechanisms to strengthen inter-agency coordination and promote public awareness and engagement. The request for information is for all of those three actions. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. ET on April 23, 2024.
