Key Impact Points:

Helsinki Hosts MICHELIN Guide Nordic Ceremony: The prestigious event, celebrating Nordic culinary excellence, will be held on May 27th, 2024, in Helsinki, spotlighting the region’s gastronomy.

Focus on Culinary Excellence and Sustainability: The ceremony will award MICHELIN Stars to top restaurants and highlight sustainable practices with the MICHELIN Green Star.

Recognition of Eco-Friendly Restaurants: The MICHELIN Green Star, introduced in 2020, acknowledges restaurants excelling in sustainable gastronomy, including ethical sourcing and eco-friendly operations.

Helsinki’s Diverse Food Culture: Hosting this event aligns with Helsinki’s vibrant food scene and a special food-themed year, showcasing the city’s culinary diversity and commitment to sustainable gastronomy.

Shining a Spotlight on Culinary Excellence and Sustainability

The City of Helsinki will be the center of the Nordic culinary world this May, as it plays host to the prestigious MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries Ceremony. This highly anticipated event will see the unveiling of the latest restaurants to be awarded coveted MICHELIN Stars, recognizing the pinnacle of culinary achievement in the region.

A Celebration of Nordic Gastronomy

The ceremony, taking place on May 27th, 2024, at Helsinki’s esteemed Savoy Theatre and City Hall, is a significant occasion for the entire Nordic food scene. Top chefs and restaurateurs from across Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland will gather to celebrate their peers and the continued evolution of Nordic gastronomy.

“We are delighted to set for the very first time our annual Nordic Ceremony in the magnificent City of Helsinki,” says Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides. “As the national culinary flagship of Finland, Helsinki will be an ideal location to bring together the crème de la crème of Nordic gastronomy.“

Beyond the Stars: Recognizing Sustainable Practices

In addition to awarding MICHELIN Stars, the ceremony will also highlight restaurants committed to sustainable practices with the MICHELIN Green Star. This award recognizes establishments that prioritize ethical sourcing, minimize waste, and implement eco-friendly initiatives throughout their operations.

“These restaurants offer dining experiences that combine culinary excellence with outstanding eco-friendly commitments,” explains the Michelin Guide. “They hold themselves accountable for both their ethical and environmental standards, and work with sustainable producers and suppliers to avoid waste and reduce or even remove plastic and other non-recyclable materials from their supply chain.“

What is a Michelin Green Star?

The MICHELIN Green Star, launched in 2020, is a relatively new addition to the Michelin Guide’s repertoire. It shines a light on restaurants that are leading the way in sustainable gastronomy, not just through their menus but also through their overall environmental and ethical practices.

Green Star Restaurants: Making a Difference

Michelin Green Star restaurants come in all shapes and sizes, but they all share a common dedication to sustainability. They may:

Work directly with local farmers and producers to source seasonal ingredients.

Implement waste reduction and recycling programs.

Utilize renewable energy sources.

Support local communities and charitable initiatives.

By showcasing these restaurants, the MICHELIN Guide aims to inspire both diners and the wider hospitality industry to embrace more sustainable practices.

Helsinki’s Food Culture Takes Center Stage

For Helsinki, hosting the MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries Ceremony is an exciting opportunity to showcase its own vibrant and diverse food scene. From Michelin-starred fine dining establishments to innovative street food vendors, the city offers a culinary experience for every palate.

“We are thrilled the MICHELIN Guide has chosen to organise one of the world’s most famous restaurant events in our city this year,” says Mayor Juhana Vartiainen. “It is an esteemed acknowledgement of Helsinki’s versatile food culture, which includes everything from high-quality fine dining and food industry innovations to berries and seafood from our local natural environment. We hope that as many residents of the city as possible will also have the opportunity enjoy the event’s atmosphere and flavours.“

A Special Year for Food in Helsinki

The ceremony coincides with Helsinki’s special food-themed year, making it an even more momentous occasion. Throughout the year, the city will host a variety of food-related events and experiences, celebrating its culinary heritage and looking forward to a future of sustainable gastronomy.

“The unveiling of the new Nordic restaurant selection of the MICHELIN Guide is a great opportunity for local food industry representatives to showcase their expertise and specialties,” concludes Marja-Leena Rinkineva, Economic Development Director for Helsinki. “Versatility, personality and uniqueness are Helsinki’s strengths when it comes to our food culture. We have the courage to combine new and old, eastern, western and northern, and come up with something completely off-the-beaten-path. Food is a key contributor to Helsinki’s overall vitality and appeal, and it is one of our main priority areas for the coming year.“
