Position Summary:
The Water Quality Specialist/Hydrogeologist will play a crucial role in investigating the relationship between managed aquifer recharge (MAR) activities and groundwater quality. They will develop decision support tools, recharge guidance, and examine other hydrogeologic effects of MAR. The specialist will also coordinate with other program teams in investigating water quality-related avenues such as the benefits of cover crops and soil health practices. Additionally, the specialist will provide technical expertise on surface water hydrology, California flood management, and restoration of floodplain habitat and groundwater-dependent ecosystems. This role will deepen the organization’s groundwater and surface water hydrology expertise while collecting, organizing, and analyzing water quality data to inform decision-making and policy development.
Responsibilities:
– Build and maintain partnerships with scientists, NGOs, agricultural producers, and agencies to develop a data-driven knowledge base about the effects of recharge on groundwater quality.
– Lead analysis of meta data to inform the development of guidance and geospatial resources that assess water quality risk under recharge.
– Develop decision support products for farmers, water districts, and communities to evaluate water quality risks/benefits of alternative recharge methods and project sites.
– Collaborate with communities and water managers to develop contingency plans to ensure the drinking water needs of communities are met if recharge adversely affects local groundwater supplies.
– Engage in efforts to develop new tools that include multiple benefit outcomes, including water quality considerations.
Qualifications:
– Master’s degree or higher in Environmental Science or Engineering, Hydrology, Geology, Hydrogeology, or related field.
– Knowledge and experience in water quality, particularly related to groundwater for human consumption.
– Experience applying technical knowledge to achieve compliance with regulations and improve programs.
– Understanding of surface and groundwater regulations, preferably in California.
– Strong data analysis and visualization skills, including proficiency in R/Python and ArcGIS Pro.
– Excellent organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
– Strong communication and presentation skills to effectively communicate complex scientific information to diverse audiences.
Location: The position may be based in San Francisco, Modesto, or Sacramento, with periodic travel required throughout the state.
