The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is seeking AmeriCorps members to join the Minnesota GreenCorps program. Minnesota GreenCorps is a statewide AmeriCorps program coordinated by the MPCA, with a mission to preserve and protect Minnesota’s environment and strengthen communities. As an AmeriCorps member, you will serve full-time at local governments, tribal nations, nonprofit organizations, or educational institutions throughout the state.
In this role, you will address critical environmental issues and help communities build climate resiliency. This is an 11-month service term, starting on September 18, 2024, and ending on August 12, 2025. You will work Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with occasional evening and weekend work required for some positions.
There are 58 positions available throughout Minnesota in locations such as Cloquet, Duluth, Bemidji, Cass Lake, Crookston, Crosslake, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, and more. Please note that housing is not provided, and you will need to secure housing near your service location.
As a Minnesota GreenCorps AmeriCorps member, you will serve in one of the four environmental topic areas: community readiness and outreach, energy conservation and green transportation, stormwater and forestry, or waste reduction and recycling. Your responsibilities may include implementing sustainability-related projects, delivering environmental education, collecting and benchmarking data, improving habitat and water quality, implementing recycling programs, collaborating with community partners, and mobilizing volunteers.
In return for your service, you will receive a living allowance of $1,150 (pre-tax) disbursed every two weeks, health insurance with premiums paid, free mental health services with counseling, student loan forbearance on eligible loans, and an education award of $7,395 for education expenses or qualified student loans. You will also receive training from the MPCA, develop green job skills, gain professional experience, network with environmental professionals, and be paired with a mentor who provides ongoing guidance.
Minimum qualifications for this position include being a minimum of 18 years or older, a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., eligible to serve in AmeriCorps, and committed to completing the 11-month (1,700 hour) AmeriCorps service term. You must also have two years of post-secondary education (a two-year associate’s degree or completion of sophomore year in a four-year degree program) or equivalent experience, and a demonstrated interest in the environment and/or service and community work.
Preferred qualifications include the ability to build and maintain relationships, work well independently and on diverse teams, take initiative and effectively manage projects, research and organize information, and possess effective communication, presentation, and writing skills. Functional computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and database management are also preferred.
Physical requirements for this position vary depending on the specific projects, but most positions are primarily based in an office setting and require sitting, standing, and operating a computer and telephone. Light to moderate lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, and carrying may be required for some positions, and limited positions may require the use of hand tools and/or power tools, as well as the ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions for up to 8 hours at a time.
Please note that positions that involve driving require a valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a driving record check. Some positions may also require access to a personal vehicle for transportation. All positions require the successful completion of a criminal history check, including an FBI fingerprint check, in accordance with AmeriCorps regulations.
