Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy (BHHC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located in Clarkston, Michigan. With over 52 years of experience, BHHC is dedicated to protecting over 1500 acres on 60 preserves in the headwaters of four watersheds for the benefit of current and future generations. BHHC promotes community engagement through outreach, education, and awareness of environmental concerns. As a dynamic and experienced leader, BHHC is seeking an Executive Director to represent the organization and continue its excellence in collaborative land conservation.
Responsibilities:
– Serve as the primary representative of BHHC to local and regional partners, municipalities, foundations, funders, and other organizations
– Lead the organization’s mission of land acquisition, stewardship, education, and outreach
– Facilitate staff and volunteer stewardship of existing properties to ensure ecological integrity and visitor safety
– Stay informed on land conservancy legislation, changes, and current environmental issues
– Write and administer grants aligned with strategic goals and the organization’s strategic plan
– Assist the Board of Directors in developing and implementing long-term goals and providing oversight to ensure the organization’s mission is fulfilled
– Coordinate with the Board President to set meeting agendas, attend meetings, and participate in select committees
– Develop an annual revenue plan and budget in coordination with staff, Finance Committee, and Board
– Generate creative fund development ideas for new revenue streams
– Oversee daily operations, including donor engagement, communications, database management, and event planning
– Provide leadership and supervision to staff, coordinate payroll and employment decisions, and ensure compliance with financial policies
– Propose future initiatives and lead the organization’s accreditation efforts
Qualifications:
– Commitment to the conservancy’s mission
– Previous experience in environmental nonprofit leadership
– Bachelor’s degree (preferably related to environmental sciences or nonprofit management)
– Excellent leadership skills with experience in project management and budget planning
– Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
– Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including some evening and weekend responsibilities
– Ability to work in an office and outdoor settings as needed
Compensation and Benefits:
– Full-time salary ranging from mid $50,000 to mid $70,000 based on experience
– Adaptable work schedule and a highly supportive team culture
