Job Description:
The Center for Environment & Society at Washington College is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Watershed Innovation to join our team. Reporting directly to the CES Director, the Director of Watershed Innovation will be responsible for enhancing the Center’s research mission on the Chester River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, and other comparable national and international watersheds. The successful candidate will have a key role in creating, developing, and managing innovative science programs that can provide effective solutions for real-world environmental problems.
Responsibilities include:
– Developing an applied research agenda that includes undergraduate students and external partners
– Collaborating closely with Washington College faculty, academic programs, and departments to foster strong relationships across the institution and the community
– Participating in and fostering a team-oriented, transdisciplinary, and collaborative culture
– Teaching one course per year to develop student interest and capacity in research and scholarship at CES
– Mentoring student projects and internships, and supporting students’ professional development
– Representing CES and communicating research to multiple internal and external audiences
– Seeking external funding individually and/or as part of research teams
– Collaborating with appropriate partners to develop, commercialize, or market innovations
– Working with the CES Director to align with the strategic goals of the Center and College
– Managing the budget, assets, and physical space of the Watershed Innovation Lab
– Contributing to the larger mission of CES in service to the Center and the College
Qualifications:
– A PhD in a relevant field, such as environmental science, earth sciences, physics, engineering, or mathematical or computational sciences
– At least five years of professional experience in higher education or research, particularly in transdisciplinary research or team science
– Experience with mentoring undergraduate students in research and teaching
– Strong written and oral communication skills
– Track record of earning extramural funding through grant writing
– Proven experience in developing interdisciplinary, national, or international partnerships across private and public sector stakeholders
– Experience with lab management and monitoring instrumentation is desired
– Familiarity with watershed monitoring and water-related research topics is preferred
– Experience with philanthropic donations is preferred, but not required
