Job Description:
The Chicago Food Policy Action Council (CFPAC) is seeking a Director for the Metro Chicago Good Food Purchasing Initiative (GFPI). This role is responsible for leading the GFPI towards its goal of creating an institutional food procurement system that is more equitable, healthy, and sustainable. The Director will be a strategic and adaptive leader who can develop a vision for the program and collaborate with stakeholders to achieve that vision. They will also be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with external and internal partners to ensure the success of the initiative.
Background on GFPP in Chicago:
The City of Chicago, Chicago Public Schools, and Chicago Park District have adopted the Good Food Purchasing Program (GFPP) to promote equitable, transparent, and accountable procurement practices. This initiative focuses on five Good Food Standards: Local Economies, Environmental Sustainability, Valued Workforce, Animal Welfare, and Nutrition. The Center for Good Food Purchasing supports institutions in implementing the GFPP by analyzing their current purchasing practices and helping develop a Good Food Action Plan. CFPAC coordinates the Metro Chicago GFPI to leverage local GFPP adoption and promote values-based food procurement in the region.
Responsibilities:
The Director will be accountable for the following:
1. GFPI Program Leadership:
– Plan and convene monthly coordination meetings with the GFPI Coordination Team
– Develop and manage the organization’s strategic plan for GFPP programs and activities
– Oversee GFPP programming and program area managers
– Support and guide program managers on programmatic, logistical, and leadership issues
– Coordinate the functioning of the GFPI governance structure
– Support GFPI evaluation efforts in collaboration with the Research Coordinator
2. Budget and Grant Management:
– Collaborate with the Operations Director and grant reporting/management contractors
– Ensure grant-funded programs are managed according to funding requirements
– Develop and co-develop grant reports and reimbursements
– Maintain and sustain the GFPI budget
– Collaborate on fundraising, grant writing, and resource development for GFPI
3. External Communications:
– Actively participate in national calls and present at local and national events
– Work with the Communications Manager to develop and publish monthly newsletters
– Lead the development and launch of an annual recognition award for top-performing institutions
Requirements:
– Extensive knowledge of local, sustainable, and healthy food systems
– In-depth understanding of U.S. agriculture and food production
– Demonstrated ability to work in complex, inter-organizational settings
– 5-7 years of team leadership experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector
– Strong emotional intelligence and collaborative spirit
– Excellent time management and prioritization skills
– Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
– Ability to make sound decisions and resolve conflicts effectively
– Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
Benefits:
