Job Description:
The Port of Seattle is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of External Relations Communications & Marketing to join their team. As the Director, you will play a key role in communicating the Port’s strategic vision and community development opportunities in a transparent, relevant, and compelling manner. You will be responsible for setting the direction and strategy for communications activities, determining key messages and target audiences, and leading coordination with divisions, customers, and stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
– Communicate the Port’s strategic vision and community development opportunities
– Set direction and strategy for communications activities
– Determine key messages and identify priority targets
– Establish creative communication approaches
– Collaborate with the Commission, Executive Office, Business, and Division leadership
– Prepare annual communications and marketing plans
– Lead coordination with divisions, customers, and stakeholders
– Update plans quarterly and analyze digital communications metrics
– Lead and direct media relations, creative services, writers, and marketing leads
– Create and direct communications that highlight leadership and strategic priorities
– Advise executive, HR, and legal staff on sensitive matters
– Play a leadership role in incident response as media officer or public affairs coordinator
Qualifications:
– Minimum 10 years of communications experience in a leadership role related to public policy
– High school diploma or equivalent required
– Desired 15 years of experience in a public agency communications leadership role
– Specialized education in public policy, communications, or marketing preferred
– Strong commitment to equity and shared values
– Demonstrated leadership abilities with accountability and honesty
– Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse population
– Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze and take appropriate action
– Ability to build relationships and provide excellent guidance and customer service
Additional Information:
– Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (flexible start and end times available)
– Work Environment: Hybrid remote/in-office setting
– Grade Review: Pay range and grade under review for new pay program implementation
– Washington State Residency Requirement: Residence in Washington state required within 30 days of employment
