Director of Environmental Planning – Port of Long Beach
Position Overview:
The Port of Long Beach, also known as The Green Port, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Environmental Planning to lead their Environmental Planning Division. The Director will oversee a team of professionals focused on sustainability, air quality, water quality, environmental remediation, and compliance with environmental laws and regulations. This role will be responsible for developing and implementing environmental policies, ensuring the Port achieves its environmental goals, and addressing community health concerns. The Director will report to the Managing Director of Environmental Affairs and Planning Bureau and will have a budget of approximately $18.1 million.
Responsibilities Include:
– Provide leadership and direction on the Port’s environmental initiatives, including sustainability practices, air and water quality improvement, and climate change strategies
– Develop and implement the Port’s environmental policies and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental health and safety regulations
– Direct the planning and implementation of the Clean Air Action Plan and other environmental programs
– Prepare grant applications and oversee the administration of awarded grants for environmental projects
– Engage with environmental organizations and community members on environmental and sustainability matters
– Represent the Port at public workshops and hearings before regulatory agencies
– Mentor and train staff on project management, problem resolution, and environmental policies
Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Planning, Environmental Engineering, or a related field (relevant experience may be substituted for education)
– Minimum 10 years of experience in the environmental field, preferably in the public sector
– Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience
– Working knowledge of CEQA/NEPA
– Ability to travel to work-related events and meetings
Desired Qualifications:
– Graduate degree in a related field
– Experience in port or coastal environmental planning
– Strong leadership background in a similar organization
– Certifications in environmental safety or related areas
To succeed in this role, you must have technical knowledge in areas such as air and water quality, climate change, and environmental regulations. You should also possess excellent leadership and communication skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with various stakeholders. The Port offers a competitive salary range of $210,000 to $235,000, along with benefits such as an auto allowance and retirement plans.
