Overview:
The School of Visual Arts (SVA) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to fill the role of Associate Director of Sustainability and Energy Management. The successful candidate will lead the campus energy management program to support and advance SVA’s sustainability efforts. This position requires evaluating, optimizing, and managing heating, cooling, and water consumption across a portfolio of 1 million square feet in 18 buildings. The Associate Director will work collaboratively with capital and facilities staff to identify and implement best practices for efficient building equipment operation, develop energy management programs, and train staff to make best use of energy, water, and utility management tools. This position is primarily in-person four days per week with one day remote.
Duties and Responsibilities:
– Develop and maintain a system of consistent, efficient, and reliable energy management
– Oversee energy studies and coordinate energy projects, including cost-saving initiatives, efficiency projects, and conservation programs
– Partner with Facilities staff to establish and implement a comprehensive energy reduction plan
– Manage project delivery process, ensuring compliance with cost, schedule, quality, and safety targets
– Collaborate with consultants to develop controls improvements, design specifications, and facilities improvements
– Develop a long-term capital plan to meet regulatory goals and SVA energy initiatives
– Coordinate with Facilities to develop projects and staff training for increased control and efficiency of building operations
– Identify cost savings opportunities through grants, incentives, rebates, and financing
– Manage the Campus Energy Dashboard, including building integration, data management, and communication with occupants
– Track and report energy performance metrics for energy use, carbon emissions, and related metrics
– Establish and maintain relationships with utilities and energy reporting vendors
– Fulfill project reporting requirements with relevant programs
Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or equivalent
– Five years of professional experience in energy management and related capital projects
– Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including benchmarking, retro-commissioning, energy efficiency grades, and climate mobilization
– Familiarity with local incentive programs, such as Con Edison and NYSERDA
– Strong data management and analysis skills, proficiency with Google Apps, Microsoft Office, and energy management systems
– Passion for sustainability and improving practices
– Familiarity with construction documents and ability to compare bid submissions
– Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
– Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
– Ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders in facilities, design, construction, academia, and government
– Flexible schedule, including occasional inspections outside of regular office hours
Preferred Qualifications:
– Certified Energy Manager/LEED AP or other relevant accreditation/certification
– PE Accreditation
– Experience in higher education facilities management
– Experience in educating individuals and groups about sustainability concepts and resources
